Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections are one of my physical medicine treatments. Not sure what trigger point injections are? Here’s a little bit more about the treatment and what to expect.

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are what most people call ‘knots’ in muscles- small areas of tightness located within a muscle fibre. Trigger points can cause discomfort, tightness and pain referral.

What is trigger point injection therapy?

Trigger point injection therapy involves injecting a small amount of sugar solution and anaesthetic directly into the trigger points. This can release the trigger points, allowing muscle to relax and decrease pain & referral associated with the trigger point.

Does it hurt?

The needles used for this therapy are very small, so the needle itself won’t hurt much. However, it can be uncomfortable when the needle is inserted into the trigger point. This pain will release once the needle is withdrawn.

How long does the appointment take?

The appointment time is 45 minutes, which includes an assessment and a check-in with the naturopathic doctor. The injections themselves should take no longer than 10-15 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.

Are there side effects?

There may be small amounts of bruising in the areas of injection, and your muscles may be sore or tender following the treatment.

What should I know for afterwards?

Avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days after the appointment is recommended.

What’s the investment?

First appointments for trigger point therapy are $150, and subsequent appointments are $115. Trigger point injections are covered under most extended benefits plans. I also offer direct billing to most extended benefits.
